One step brought us into the family sitting-room, without any introductory lobby or passage: they call it here `the house' preeminently. It includes kitchen and parlour, generally; but I believe at Wuthering Heights the kitchen is forced to retreat altogether into another quarter: at least I distinguished a chatter of tongues, and a clatter of culinary utensils, deep within; and I observed no signs of roasting, boiling, or baking, about the huge fireplace; nor any glitter of copper saucepans and tin cullenders

on the walls. One end, indeed, reflected splendidly both light and heat from ranks of immense pewter dishes, interspersed with silver jugs and tankards, towering row after row, on a vast oak dresser, to the very roof. The latter had never been underdrawn: its entire anatomy lay bare to an inquiring eye, except where a frame of wood laden with oatcakes and clusters of legs of beef, mutton, and ham, concealed it. Above the chimney were sundry villainous ; old guns, and a couple of horse-pistols: and, by way of

My little wife came and sat upon my knee, to coax me to be quiet, and drew a line with her pencil down the middle of my nose; but I couldn't dine off that, though it was very agreeable. ¡¡¡¡'Don't you think, my dear,' said I, 'it would be better for you to remonstrate with Mary Anne?' ¡¡¡¡'Oh no, please! I couldn't, Doady!' said Dora. ¡¡¡¡'Why not, my love?' I gently asked. ¡¡¡¡'Oh, because I am such a little goose,' said Dora, 'and she knows I am!' ¡¡¡¡I thought this sentiment so incompatible with the establishment of any system of check on Mary Anne, that I frowned a little. ¡¡¡¡'Oh, what ugly wrinkles in my bad boy's forehead!' said Dora, and still being on my knee, she traced them with her pencil; putting it to her rosy lips to make it mark blacker, a

'But, my love,' said I. ¡¡¡¡'No, no! please!' cried Dora, with a kiss, 'don't be a naughty Blue Beard! Don't be serious!' ¡¡¡¡'my precious wife,' said I, 'we must be serious sometimes. Come! Sit down on this chair, close beside me! Give me the pencil! There! Now let us talk sensibly. You know, dear'; what a little hand it was to hold, and what a tiny wedding-ring it was to see! 'You know, my love, it is not exactly comfortable to have to go out without one's dinner. Now, is it?' ¡¡¡¡'N-n-no!' replied Dora, faintly.

¡¡¡¡The advent of Mrs. Gummidge with a basket, explained how the house had happened to be empty. She had hurried out to buy something that was needed, against Mr. Peggotty's return with the tide; and had left the door open in the meanwhile, lest Ham and little Em'ly, with whom it was an early night, should come home while she was gone. Steerforth, after very much improving Mrs. Gummidge's spirits by a cheerful salutation and a jocose embrace, took my arm, and hurried me away. ¡¡¡¡He had improved his own spirits, no less than Mrs. Gummidge's, for they were again at their usual flow, and he was full of vivacious conversation as we went along. ¡¡¡¡'And so,' he said, gaily, 'we abandon this buccaneer life tomorrow, do we?' ¡¡¡¡'So we agreed,' I returned. 'And
oil paintingour places by the coach are taken, you know.' ¡¡¡¡'Ay! there's no help for it, I suppose,' said Steerforth. 'I have almost forgotten that there is anything to do in the world but to go out tossing on the sea here. I wish there was not.' ¡¡¡¡'As long as the novelty should last,' said I, laughing. ¡¡¡¡'Like enough,' he returned; 'though there's a sarcastic meaning in that observation for an amiable piece of innocence like my young friend. Well! I dare say I am a capricious fellow, David. I know I am; but while the iron is hot, I can strike it vigorously too. I could pass a reasonably good examination already, as a pilot in these waters, I think.' ¡¡¡¡'Mr. Peggotty says you are a wonder,' I returned. ¡¡¡¡'A nautical phenomenon, eh?' laughed Steerforth.

¡¡¡¡But could he even wait till they reached Hong Kong? Fogg had an abominable way of jumping from one boat to another, and, before anything could be effected, might get full under way again for Yokohama. ¡¡¡¡Fix decided that he must warn the English authorities, and signal the Rangoon before her arrival. This was easy to do, since the steamer stopped at Singapore, whence there is a telegraphic wire to Hong Kong. He finally resolved, moreover, before acting more positively, to question Passepartout. It would not be difficult to make him talk; and, as there was no time to lose, Fix prepared to make himself known. ¡¡¡¡It was now the 30th of October, and on the following day
oil paintingthe Rangoon was due at Singapore. ¡¡¡¡Fix emerged from his cabin and went on deck. Passepartout was promenading up and down in the forward part of the steamer. The detective rushed forward with every appearance of extreme surprise, and exclaimed, "You here, on the Rangoon?" ¡¡¡¡"What, Monsieur Fix, are you on board?" returned the really astonished Passepartout, recognising his crony of the Mongolia. "Why, I left you at Bombay, and here you are, on the way to Hong Kong! Are you going round the world too?" ¡¡¡¡"No, no," replied Fix; "I shall stop at Hong Kong--at least for some days." ¡¡¡¡"Hum!" said Passepartout, who seemed for an instant perplexed. "But how is it I have not seen you on board since we left Calcutta?"

"Is this where Father lives?" asked the child. ¡¡¡¡ "Who?" ¡¡¡¡ "Mr. Fawley, that's his name." ¡¡¡¡ Sue ran up to Jude's room and told him, and he hurried down as soon as he could, though to her impatience he seemed long. ¡¡¡¡ "What--is it he--so soon?" she asked as Jude came. ¡¡¡¡ She scrutinized the child's features, and suddenly went away into the little sitting-room adjoining. Jude lifted the boy to a level with himself, keenly regarded him with gloomy tenderness, and telling him he would have been met if they had known of his coming so soon, set him provisionally in a chair whilst he went to look for Sue, whose supersensitiveness was disturbed, as he knew. He found her in the dark, bending over an arm-chair. He enclosed her with his arm, and putting his face by hers, whispered, "What's the matter?" ¡¡¡¡ "What Arabella says is true--true! I see you in him!"
