Fanny's thoughts were now all engrossed by the two who had left her so long ago, and getting quite impatient, she resolved to go in search of them. She followed their steps along the bottom walk, and had just turned up into another, when the voice and the laugh of Miss Crawford once more caught her ear; the sound approached, and a few more windings brought them before her. They were just returned into the wilderness from the park, to which a sidegate, not fastened, had tempted them very soon after their leaving her, and they had been across a portion of the park into the

avenue which Fanny had been hoping the whole morning to reach at last, and had been sitting down under one of the trees. This was their history. It was evident that they had been spending their time pleasantly, and were not aware of the length of their absence. Fanny's best consolation was in being assured that Edmund had wished for her very much, and that he should certainly have come back for her, had she not been tired already; but this was not quite sufficient to do away with the pain of

¡¡¡¡Jo heard, but Amy was just struggling to her feet, and did not catch a word. Jo glanced over her shoulder, and the little demon she was harbouring said in her ear: `No matter whether she heard or not, let her take care of herself.' Laurie had vanished round the bend; Jo was just at the turn, and Amy, far behind, striking out towards the smoother ice in the middle of the river. For a minute Jo stood still, with a strange feeling at her heart; then she resolved to go

on, but something held and turned her round, just in time to see Amy throw up her hands and go down, with a sudden crash of rotten ice, the splash of water, and a cry that made Jo's heart stand still with fear. She tried to call Laurie, but her voice was gone; she tried to rush forward, but her feet seemed to have no strength in them; and, for a second, she could only stand motionless, staring, with a terror-stricken face, at the little blue hood above the black water. Something rushed swiftly by her, and Laurie's voice cried out: `Bring a rail; quick, quick!'

Lucy looked round her. They were in a small room evidently designed to be used as a study, but equally evidently not used as such for a very long time. There were piles of dusty papers on the desk and cobwebs festooned from the corners of the ceiling. The air smelt damp and musty.
"Do you want me to clean this room?" she asked.
Old Mr. Crackenthorpe shook his head fiercely.
"No, you don't! I keep this room locked up. Emma would like to fiddle about in here, but I don't let her. It's my room. See these stones? They're geological specimens."

Lucy looked at a collection of twelve or fourteen lumps of rock, some polished and some rough.
"Lovely," she said kindly. "Most interesting."
"You're quite right. They are interesting. You're an intelligent girl. I don't show them to everybody. I'll show you some more things."
"It's very kind of you, but I ought really to get on with what I was doing. With six people in the house –"

Nevertheless, there was a very real danger that on the death of yoursister-in-law he might,in his loneliness, turn to this beautiful girl forsympathy and comfort and it might end-as so often happens with elderlymen-in his marrying her.Your fear was increased by your knowledge of MissGrey. You are,I fancy,an excellent,if somewhat cynical judge ofcharacter. You judged, whether correctly or not, that Miss Grey was a type ofyoung woman "on the make".You had no doubt that she would jump at the chanceof becoming Lady Clarke.Your brother was an extremely healthy and vigorousman. There might be children and your chance of inheriting your brother'swealth would vanish.

"You have been,I fancy,in essence a disappointed man all your life.Youhave been the rolling stone-and you have gathered very little moss. You werebitterly jealous of your brother's wealth. "I repeat then that, turning over various schemes in your mind, yourmeeting with Mr Cust gave you an idea. His bombastic Christian names, hisaccount of his epileptic seizures and of his headaches, his whole shrinkingand insignificant personality, struck you as fitting him for the tool youwanted. The whole alphabetical plan sprang into your mind-Cust's initials-thefact that your brother's name began with a C and that he lived at Churstonwere the nucleus of the scheme. You even went so far as to hint to Cust athis possible end-though you could hardly hope that that suggestion wouldbear the rich fruit that it did!

She pulled off the little white woolen cap she was wearing and threw iton the ground.I could see her better now as she turned a little so that thelight fell on her. My first impression was of the Dutch dolls that my sisters used to playwith in my childhood. Her hair was black and cut in a straight bob and a bangacross the forehead. Her cheek-bones were high and her whole figure had aqueer modern angularity that was not, somehow, unattractive. She was notgood-looking-plain rather-but there was an intensity about her, aforcefulness that made her a person quite impossible to overlook. "You are Miss Barnard?"I asked. "I am Megan Barnard. You belong to the police,I suppose?"

"Well,"I said."Not exactly-"She interrupted me. "I don't think I've got anything to say to you.My sister was a nicebright girl with no men friends.Good morning." She gave me a short laugh as she spoke and regarded me challengingly. "That's the correct phrase,I believe?"she said. "I'm not a reporter,if that's what you're getting at." "Well, what are you?"She looked around "Where's mum and dad?" "Your father is showing the police your sister's bedroom.Your mother'sin there. She's very upset." The girl seemed to make a decision. "Come in here,"she said.

Of course each one of them expected to see the Wizard in the shape he had taken before, and all were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room. They kept close to the door and closer to one another, for the stillness of the empty room was more dreadful than any of the forms they had seen Oz take.
Presently they heard a Voice, seeming to come

from somewhere near the top of the great dome, and it said, solemnly.
"I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Why do you seek me?"
They looked again in every part of the room, and then, seeing no one, Dorothy asked, "Where are you?"
"I am everywhere," answered the Voice, "but to the eyes of common mortals I am invisible. I will now seat myself upon my throne, that you may converse with me." Indeed, the Voice seemed just then to come straight from the throne itself; so they walked toward it and stood in a row while Dorothy said

In a little while the measured tread of military men was heard approaching, and the culprits entered the presence in charge of an under-sheriff and escorted by a detail of the king's guard. The civil officer knelt before Tom, then stood aside; the three doomed persons knelt also, and remained so; the guard took position behind Tom's chair. Tom scanned the prisoners curiously. Something about the dress or appearance of the man had stirred a vague memory in him.
Modern Art Painting
Methinks I have seen this man ere now... but the when or the where fail me"-such was Tom's thought. Just then the man glanced quickly up, and quickly dropped his face again, not being able to endure the awful port of sovereignty; but the one full glimpse of the face, which Tom got, was sufficient. He said to himself: "Now is the matter clear; this is the stranger that plucked Giles Witt out of the Thames, and saved his life that windy, bitter first day of the New Year-a brave, good deed-pity he hath been doing baser ones and got himself in this sad case...

Tom played with the jeweled dagger that hung upon his thigh; he examined the costly and exquisite ornaments of the room; he tried each of the sumptuous chairs, and thought how proud he would be if the Offal Court herd could only peep in and see him in his grandeur. He wondered if they would believe the marvelous tale he should tell when he got home, or if they would shake their heads, and say his overtaxed imagination had at last upset his reason.

At the end of half an hour it suddenly occurred to him that the prince was gone a long time; then right away he began to feel lonely; very soon he fell to listening and longing, and ceased to toy with the pretty things about him; he grew uneasy, then restless, then distressed.

The young man resented the tart, short tone. "Poor little girl!" he said to himself tenderly. "That's what it is having a stepmother, instead of a proper mother." But he obeyed Mrs. Bunting, and then he was pleased he had done so, for Daisy looked up, and a bright blush came over her pretty face.
"Joe begs you won't stop yet awhile. Go on with your reading," commanded Mrs. Bunting quickly. "Now, Joe, you can go and sit over there, close to Daisy, and then you won't miss a word."
Modern Art Painting
There was a sarcastic inflection in her voice, even Chandler noticed that, but he obeyed her with alacrity, and crossing the room he went and sat on a chair just behind Daisy. From there he could note with reverent delight the charming way her fair hair grew upwards from the nape of her slender neck.
"The AVENGER: A THE-O-RY"
began Daisy again, clearing her throat.

About five o'clock, after the street lamps were well alight, Mr. Sleuth went out, and that same evening there came two parcels addressed to his landlady. These parcels contained clothes. But it was quite clear to Mrs. Bunting's eyes that they were not new clothes. In fact, they had evidently been bought in some good second-hand clothes-shop. A funny thing for a real gentleman like Mr. Sleuth to do! It proved that he had given up all hope of getting back his lost luggage.
Modern Art Painting
When the lodger had gone out he had not taken his bag with him, of that Mrs. Bunting was positive. And yet, though she searched high and low for it, she could not find the place where Mr. Sleuth kept it. And at last, had it not been that she was a very clear-headed woman, with a good memory, she would have been disposed to think that the bag had never existed, save in her imagination.

"You'll certainly not find the motive there, Monsieur Dax," Monsieur Stangerson said with a cold smile.
"In any case, the motive was not theft!" said the Chief impatiently.
"Oh! we are quite convinced of that!" cried the examining magistrate.

At that moment the door of the laboratory opened and the officer in charge of the gendarmes entered and handed a card to the examining magistrate. Monsieur de Marquet read it and uttered a half angry exclamation:
"This is really too much!" he cried.
"What is it?" asked the Chief.

The impression made on Paris by this news may be easily imagined. Already, at that time, the learned world was deeply interested in the labours of Professor Stangerson and his daughter. These labours - the first that were attempted in

Modern Art Painting

Modern Art Painting

Modern Art Painting
