¡¡¡¡ "If I had made any difficulty about fetching the key, there might have been some excuse, but I went the very moment she said she wanted it." ¡¡¡¡ "Nothing could be more obliging than your manner, I am sure, and I dare say you walked as fast as you could; but still it is some distance, you know, from this spot to the house, quite into the house; and when people are waiting, they are bad judges of time, and every half minute seems like five." ¡¡¡¡ He go

Fanny thought she discerned in his standing there an indication of relenting, which encouraged her to another attempt, and she said, therefore, "It is a pity you should not join them. They expected to have a better view of the house from that part of the park, and will be thinking how it may be improved; and nothing of that sort, you know, can be settled without you." ¡¡¡¡ She found herself more successful in sending away than in retaining a companion. Mr. Rushworth was worked on. "Well," said he, "if you really think I had better go: it would be foolish to bring the key for nothing." And letting himself out, he walked off without farther ceremony.

¡¡¡¡`I'll try,' said Amy, for the advice suited her; and, after a flurry to get ready, she ran after the friends, who were just disappearing over the hill. It was not far to the river, but both were ready before Amy reached them. Jo saw her coming, and turned her back; Laurie did not see, for he was carefully skating along the shore, sounding the ice, for a warm spell had preceded the cold snap. ¡¡¡¡`I'll go on to the first bend, and see if it's all right, before

we begin to race,' Amy heard him say, as he shot away, looking like a young Russian, in his fur-trimmed coat and cap. Jo heard Amy panting after her run, stamping her feet and blowing her fingers, as she tried to put her skates on; but Jo never turned, and went slowly zigzagging down the river, taking a bitter, unhappy sort of satisfaction in her sister's troubles. She had cherished her anger till it grew strong, and took possession of her, as evil thoughts and feelings always do, unless cast out at once. As Laurie turned the bend, he shouted back: `Keep near the shore, it isn't safe in the middle.'

Descended from Kings," said Mr. Crackenthorpe. "My mother's family tree, that is - not my father’s. He was a vulgarian! Common old man! Didn't like me! I was a cut above him always. Took after my mother's side. Had a natural feeling for art and classical sculpture - he couldn't see anything in it - silly old fool. Don't remember my mother – died when I was two. Last of her family. They were sold up and she married my father. But you look here - Edward the Confessor – Ethelred the Unready - whole lot of them. And that was before the Normans came. Before the Normans - that's something, isn't it?"
"It is indeed."

Now I'll show you something else." He guided her across the room to an enormous piece of dark oak furniture. Lucy was rather uneasily conscious of the strength of the fingers clutching her arm. There certainly seemed nothing feeble about old Mr. Crackenthorpe today. "See this? Came out of Lushington – that was my mother's people's place. Elizabethan, this is. Takes four men to move it. You don't know what I keep inside it, do you? Like me show you?"
"Do show me," said Lucy politely.

"What's that?" "Death, mademoiselle, unfortunately creates a prejudice.A prejudice infavour of the deceased.I heard what you said just now to my friendHastings."A nice bright girl with no men friends."You said that in mockeryof the newspapers,And it is very true-when a young girl is dead, that isthe kind of thing that is said. She was bright. She was happy. She wassweet-tempered.She had not a care in the world. She had no undesirableacquaintances. There is a great charity always to the dead.Do you know what Ishould like this minute?I should like to find someone who knew ElizabethBarnard and who does not know she is dead! Then, perhaps,I should hear whatis useful to me-the truth."

"And did she pay any attention to your advice?" "Probably not,"said Megan cynically. "Will you, mademoiselle,be precise."

The Lion thought it might be as well to frighten the Wizard, so he gave a large, loud roar, which was so fierce and dreadful that Toto jumped away from him in alarm and tipped over the screen that stood in a corner. As it fell with a crash they looked that way, and the next moment all of them were filled with wonder. For they saw, standing in just the spot the screen had hidden, a little old man, with a bald head and a wrinkled face, who seemed to be as much surprised as they were. The Tin Woodman, raising his axe, rushed toward the little man and cried out, "Who are you?"

Our friends looked at him in surprise and dismay.
"I thought Oz was a great Head," said Dorothy.
"And I thought Oz was a lovely Lady," said the Scarecrow.
"And I thought Oz was a terrible Beast," said the Tin Woodman.
"And I thought Oz was a Ball of Fire," exclaimed the Lion.
"No, you are all wrong," said the little man meekly. "I have been making believe."
"Making believe!" cried Dorothy. "Are you not a Great Wizard?"

I am innocent-neither hath that wherewith I am charged been more than but lamely proved-yet I speak not of that; the judgment is gone forth against me and may not suffer alteration; yet in mine extremity I beg a boon, for my doom is more than I can bear. A grace, a grace, my lord the king! in thy royal compassion grant my prayer-give commandment that I be hanged!"
Tom was amazed. This was not the outcome he had looked for.

Odds my life, a strange boon! Was it not the fate intended thee?"
"Oh, good my liege, not so! It is ordered that I be boiled alive!"
The hideous surprise of these words almost made Tom spring from his chair. As soon as he could recover his wits he cried out:
"Have thy wish, poor soul! an thou had poisoned a hundred men thou shouldst not suffer so miserable a death."

occupying himself each day with some harmless hobby. On foggy nights, once the quiet household is plunged in sleep, he creeps out of the house, maybe between one and two o'clock, and swiftly makes his way straight to what has become The Avenger's murder area. Picking out a likely victim, he approaches her with Judas-like gentleness, and having committed his awful crime, goes quietly home again. After a good bath and breakfast

he turns up happy, once more the quiet individual who is an excellent son, a kind brother, esteemed and even beloved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Meantime, the police are searching about the scene of the tragedy for what they regard as the usual type of criminal lunatic.

ow quietly, how uneventfully, how pleasantly, sped the next few days. Already life was settling down into a groove. Waiting on Mr. Sleuth was just what Mrs. Bunting could manage to do easily, and without tiring herself.
It had at once become clear that the lodger preferred to be waited on only by one person, and that person his landlady.

He gave her very little trouble. Indeed, it did her good having to wait on the lodger; it even did her good that he was not like other gentlemen; for the fact occupied her mind, and in a way it amused her. The more so that whatever his oddities Mr. Sleuth had none of those tiresome, disagreeable ways with which landladies are only too familiar, and which seem peculiar only to those human beings who also happen to be lodgers.

Gustav Klimt Painting

Gustav Klimt Painting
