Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William
"Curious, aren't you? All women are curious." He took a key from his pocket and unlocked the door of the lower cupboard. From this he took out a surprisingly new-looking cash box. This, again, he unlocked.
Take a look here, my dear. Know what these are?
He lifted out a small paper-wrapped cylinder and pulled away the paper from one end. Gold coins trickled out into his palm
Bouguereau William
"Look at these, young lady. Look at ’em, touch 'em. Know what they are? Bet you don't! You're too young. Sovereigns – that's what they are. Good golden sovereigns. What we use before all these dirty bits of paper came into fashion. Worth a lot more than silly pieces of paper. Collected them a long time back. I've got other things in this box, too. Lots of things put away in here. All ready for the future. Emma doesn't know - nobody knows. It's our secret, see, girl? D’you know why I'm telling you and showing you?"
"Why?"

"In Betty Barnard you found just the type of girl you were looking for. You took her out once or twice, explaining to her that you were amarried man,and that outings must therefore take place in a somewhathole-and-corner manner. "Then, your preliminary plans completed, you set to work! You sent theAndover list to Cust, directing him to go there on a certain date, and yousent off the first A B C letter to me. "On the appointed day you went to Andover-and killed Mrs Ascher-withoutanything occurring to damage your plans. "Murder No.1was successfully accomplished.
Bouguereau William
"For the second murder, you took the precaution of committing it,inreality, the day before.I am fairly certain that Betty Barnard was killedwell before midnight on the 24th July. "We now come to murder No 3-the important-in fact, the real murder fromyour point of view. "And here a full meed of praise is due to Hastings, who made a simpleand obvious remark to which no attention was paid. "He suggested that the third letter went astray intentionally! "And he was right!...... "In that one simple fact lies the answer to the question that haspuzzled me so all along. Why were the letters addressed in the first place toHercule Poirot,a private detective, and not to the police?

The girl hesitated for a minute or two. Poirot said with a slight smile: "I will help you.I heard what you said to Hastings. That your sister wasa bright, happy girl with no men friends. It was-un peu-the opposite that wastrue, was it not?" Megan said slowly: "There wasn't any harm in Betty.I want you to understand that. She'dalways go straight. She's not the weekending kind. Nothing of that sort. But she liked being taken out and dancing and-oh,cheap flattery and compliments and all that sort of thing." "And she was pretty-yes?" This question, the third time I had heard it,met this time with apractical response.
Bouguereau William
Megan slipped off the table, went to her suitcase, snapped it open andextracted something which she handed to Poirot. In a leather frame was a head and shoulders of a fair-haried,smilinggirl.Her hair had evidently recently been permed,it stood out from her headin a mass of rather frizzy curls. The smile was arch and artificial. It wascertainly not a face that you could call beautiful, but it had an obviousand cheap prettiness. Poirot handed it back, saying: "You and she do not resemble each other, mademoiselle." "Oh!I'm the plain one of the family.I've always known that."She seemedto brush aside the fact as umimportant.

Hush, my dear," he said. "Don't speak so loud, or you will be overheard -- and I should be ruined. I'm supposed to be a Great Wizard."
"And aren't you?" she asked.
"Not a bit of it, my dear; I'm just a common man."
"You're more than that," said the Scarecrow, in a grieved tone; "you're a humbug."
"Exactly so!" declared the little man, rubbing his hands together as if it pleased him. "I am a humbug."
Bouguereau William
"But this is terrible," said the Tin Woodman. "How shall I ever get my heart?"
"Or I my courage?" asked the Lion.
"Or I my brains?" wailed the Scarecrow, wiping the tears from his eyes with his coat sleeve.
"My dear friends," said Oz, "I pray you not to speak

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William
The prisoner bowed his face to the ground and burst into passionate expressions of gratitude-ending with:
"If ever thou shouldst know misfortune-which God forbid!-may thy goodness to me this day be remembered and requited!"
Tom turned to the Earl of Hertford, and said:
"My lord, is it believable that there was warrant for this man's ferocious doom?"
Bouguereau William
"It is the law, your grace-for poisoners. In Germany coiners be boiled to death in oil-not cast in of a sudden, but by a rope let down into the oil by degrees, and slowly; first the feet, then the legs, then-"
"Oh, prithee, no more, my lord, I cannot bear it!" cried Tom, covering his eyes with his hands to shut out the picture. "I beseech your good lordship that order be taken to change this law-oh, let no more poor creatures be visited with its tortures."

And now and then his mind reverted to his treatment by those rude Christ's Hospital boys, and he said, "When I am king, they shall not have bread and shelter only, but also teachings out of books; for a full belly is little worth where the mind is starved, and the heart. I will keep this diligently in my remembrance, that this day's lesson be not lost upon me, and my people suffer thereby; for learning softeneth the heart and breedeth gentleness and charity."
Bouguereau William
The lights began to twinkle, it came on to rain, the wind rose, and a raw and gusty night set in. The houseless prince, the homeless heir to the throne of England, still moved on, drifting deeper into the maze of squalid alleys where the swarming hives of poverty and misery were massed together.
Suddenly a great drunken ruffian collared him and said:Bouguereau William

but I confess that I am amazed the police have so wholly confined their inquiries to the part of London where these murders have been actually committed. I am quite sure from all that has come out - and we must remember that full information is never given to the newspapers - The Avenger should be sought for in the West and not in the East End of London - Believe me to remain, Sir, yours very truly - "
Again Daisy hesitated, and then with an effort she brought out the word "Gab-o-ri-you," said she.
Bouguereau William
"What a funny name!" said Bunting wonderingly.
And then Joe broke in: "That's the name of a French chap what wrote detective stories," he said. "Pretty good, some of them are, too!"
"Then this Gaboriyou has come over to study these Avenger murders, I take it?" said Bunting.
"Oh, no," Joe spoke with confidence. "Whoever's written that silly letter just signed that name for fun."

Mr. Sleuth did not ask to be called unduly early. Bunting and his Ellen had fallen into the way of lying rather late in the morning, and it was a great comfort not to have to turn out to make the lodger a cup of tea at seven, or even half-past seven. Mr. Sleuth seldom required anything before eleven.
But odd he certainly was.
Bouguereau William
The second evening he had been with them Mr. Sleuth had brought in a book of which the queer name was Cruden's Concordance. That and the Bible - Mrs. Bunting had soon discovered that there was a relation between the two books - seemed to be the lodger's only reading. He spent hours each day, generally after he had eaten the breakfast which also served for luncheon, poring over the Old Testament and over that, strange kind of index to the Book.

Monsieur Joseph Rouletabille entered the laboratory, bowed to us, and waited for Monsieur de Marquet to ask him to explain his presence.
"You pretend, Monsieur, that you know the motive for the crime, and that that motive - in the face of all the evidence that has been forthcoming - was robbery?"
Bouguereau William
"No, Monsieur, I do not pretend that. I do not say that robbery was the motive for the crime, and I don't believe it was."
"Then, what is the meaning of this card?"
"It means that robbery was one of the motives for the crime."
"What leads you to think that?"
"If you will be good enough to accompany me, I will show you."

At one gulp. The only thing he spat out was the main-mast, for it stuck in his teeth. To my own good luck, that ship was loaded with meat, preserved foods, crackers, bread, bottles of wine, raisins, cheese, coffee, sugar, wax candles, and boxes of matches. With all these blessings, I have been able to live happily on for two whole years, but now I am at the very last crumbs. Today there is nothing left in the cupboard, and this candle you see here is the last one I have

"And then, my dear, we'll find ourselves in darkness."
"Then, my dear Father," said Pinocchio, "there is no time to lose. We must try to escape."

"Escape! How?"
"We can run out of the Shark's mouth and dive into the sea."
"You speak well, but I cannot swim, my dear Pinocchio."
"Why should that matter? You can climb on my shoulders and I, who am a fine swimmer, will carry you safely to the shore."

midnight; when the twelve strokes of midnight had sounded by the cuckoo-clock in the laboratory, she rose, kissed Monsieur Stangerson and bade him good-night. To me she said "bon soir, Daddy Jacques" as she passed into The Yellow Room.

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William
Bouguereau William
Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William
Bouguereau William
