The Birth of Venus
Because I don't want you to think I'm a played-out sick old man. Lots of life in the old dog yet. My wife's been dead a long time. Always objecting to everything, she was. Didn't like the names I gave the children - good Saxon names - no interest in that family tree. I never paid any attention to what she said, though – and she was a poor-spirited creature - always gave in. now you're a spirited filly – a very nice filly indeed. I'll give you some advice. Don't throw yourself away on a young man. Young men are fools! You want to take care of your future. You wait…." His fingers pressed into Lucy's arm.

man. Young men are fools! You want to take care of your future. You wait…." His fingers pressed into Lucy's arm. He leaned to her ear. "I don't say more than that. Wait. Those silly fools think I'm going to die soon. I'm not. Shouldn't be surprised if I outlived the lot of them. And then we'll see! Oh, yes, then we'll see. Harold's got no children. Cedric and Alfred aren't married. Emma – Emma will never marry now. She's a bit sweet to Quimper - but Quimper will never think of marrying Emma. There's Alexander, of course. Yes, there's Alexander…. But, you know, I'm fond of Alexander…. Yes, that's awkward. I'm fond of Alexander."
He paused for a moment, frowning, then said:
"Well, girl, what about it? What about it, eh?"

"Of course the letter was meant to go astray! The police were to be seton the trail only when the murder was safely over.Your brother's nightlywalk provided you with the opportunity. And so successfully had the A B Cterror taken hold on the public mind that the possibility of your guiltnever occurred to anyone. In what way exactly do you consider your sister was behaving foolishly? Do you mean, perhaps,in relation to Mr Donald Fraser?" "That's it,exactly.Don's a very quiet sort of person-but he-well,naturally he'd resent certain things-and then-""And then what, mademoiselle?" His eyes were on her very steadily. It may have been my fancy but it seemed to me that she hesitated asecond before answering. "I was afraid that he might-chuck her altogether. And that would havebeen a pity. He's a very steady and hard-working man and would have made hera good husband."
The Birth of Venus
Poirot continued to gaze at her.She did not flush under his glance butreturned it with one of her own equally steady and with something else init-something that reminded me of her first defiant, disdainful manner. "So it is like that,"he said at last. "We do not speak the truth any longer." She shrugged her shoulders and turned towards the door. "Well,"she said."I've done what I could to help you." Poirot's voice arrested her. "Wait, mademoiselle.I have something to tell you.Come back." Rather unwillingly,I thought, she obeyed.

of these little things. Think of me, and the terrible trouble I'm in at being found out."
"Doesn't anyone else know you're a humbug?" asked Dorothy.
"No one knows it but you four -- and myself," replied Oz. "I have fooled everyone so long that I thought I should never be found out. It was a great mistake my ever letting you into the Throne Room. Usually I will not see even my subjects, and so they believe I am something terrible."
The Birth of Venus
But, I don't understand," said Dorothy, in bewilderment. "How was it that you appeared to me as a great Head?"
"That was one of my tricks," answered Oz. "Step this way, please, and I will tell you all about it."
He led the way to a small chamber in the rear of the Throne Room, and they all followed him. He pointed to one corner, in which lay the great Head, made out of many thicknesses of paper, and with a carefully painted face.

The Birth of Venus
The earl's face showed profound ratification, for he was a man of merciful and generous impulses-a thing not very common with his class in that fierce age.
He said:
"These your grace's noble words have sealed its doom. History will remember it to the honor of your royal house."
The under-sheriff was about to remove his prisoner; Tom gave him a sign to wait; then he said:
The Birth of Venus
"Good sir, I would look into this matter further. The man has said his deed was but lamely proved. Tell me what thou knowest."
"If the king's grace please, it did appear upon the trial, that this man entered into a house in the hamlet of Islington where one lay sick-three witnesses say it was at ten of the clock in the morning and two say it was some minutes later-the sick man being alone at the time, and sleeping-and presently the man came forth again, and went his way. The sick man died within the hour, being torn with spasm and retchings." The Birth of Venus

As night drew to a close that day, the prince found himself far down in the close-built portion of the city. His body was bruised, his hands were bleeding, and his rags were all besmirched with mud. He wandered on and on, and grew more and more bewildered, and so tired and faint he could hardly drag one foot after the other. He had ceased to ask questions of any one

He kept muttering to himself, "Offal Court-that is the name; if I can but find it before my strength is wholly spent and I drop, then am I saved-for his people will take me to the palace and prove that I am none of theirs, but the true prince, and I shall have mine own again."

It is a silly letter," Mrs. Bunting had broken in resentfully. "I wonder a respectable paper prints such rubbish."
"Fancy if The Avenger did turn out to be a gentleman cried Daisy, in an awe-struck voice. "There'd be a how-to-do!"
"There may be something in the notion," said her father thoughtfully. "After all, the monster must be somewhere. This very minute he must be somewhere a-hiding of himself."
The Birth of Venus
Of course he's somewhere," said Mrs. Bunting scornfully.
She had just heard Mr. Sleuth moving overhead. 'Twould soon be time for the lodger's supper.
She hurried on: "But what I do say is that - that - he has nothing to do with the West End. Why, they say it's a sailor from the Docks - that's a good bit more likely, I take it. But there, I'm fair sick of the whole subject! We talk of nothing else in this house. The Avenger this - The Avenger that - "

As for the delicate and yet the all-important question of money, Mr. Sleuth was everything - everything that the most exacting landlady could have wished. Never had there been a more confiding or trusting gentleman. On the very first day he had been with them he had allowed his money - the considerable sum of one hundred and eighty-four sovereigns -

to lie about wrapped up in little pieces of rather dirty newspaper on his dressing-table. That had quite upset Mrs. Bunting. She had allowed herself respectfully to point out to him that what he was doing was foolish, indeed wrong. But as only answer he had laughed, and she had been startled when the loud, unusual and discordant sound had issued from his thin lips.

The young man asked us to follow him into the vestibule, and we did. He led us towards the lavatory and begged Monsieur de Marquet to kneel beside him. This lavatory is lit by the glass door, and, when the door was open, the light which penetrated was sufficient to light it perfectly. Monsieur de Marquet and Monsieur Joseph Rouletabille knelt down on the threshold, and the young man pointed to a spot on the pavement.
The Birth of Venus
"The stones of the lavatory have not been washed by Daddy Jacques for some time," he said; "that can be seen by the layer of dust that covers them. Now, notice here, the marks of two large footprints and the black ash they left where they have been. That ash is nothing else than the charcoal dust that covers the path along which you must pass through the forest, in order to get directly from Epinay to the Glandier.

The Birth of Venus
"Dreams, my boy!" answered Geppetto, shaking his head and smiling sadly. "Do you think it possible for a Marionette, a yard high, to have the strength to carry me on his shoulders and swim?"
"Try it and see! And in any case, if it is written that we must die, we shall at least die together."
Not adding another word, Pinocchio took the candle in his hand and going ahead to light the way, he said to his father:
"Follow me and have no fear."
The Birth of Venus
They walked a long distance through the stomach and the whole body of the Shark. When they reached the throat of the monster, they stopped for a while to wait for the right moment in which to make their escape.
I want you to know that the Shark, being very old and suffering from asthma and heart trouble, was obliged to sleep with his mouth open. Because of this, Pinocchio was able to catch a glimpse of the sky filled with stars, as he looked up through the open jaws of his new home

not be left alone through the night in the lonely park. It was the fancy of Mademoiselle to spend the fine weather in the pavilion; no doubt, she found it more cheerful than the chateau and, for the four years it had been built, she had never failed to take up her lodging there in the spring. With the return of winter, Mademoiselle returns to the chateau, for there is no fireplace in The Yellow Room.
The Birth of Venus
"'We were staying in the pavilion, then - Monsieur Stangerson and me. We made no noise. He was seated at his desk. As for me, I was sitting on a chair, having finished my work and, looking at him, I said to myself: "What a man! - what intelligence! - what knowledge!" I attach importance to the fact that we made no noise; for, because of that, the assassin certainly thought that we had left the place. And, suddenly, while the cuckoo was sounding the half after midnight, a desperate clamour broke out in The Yellow Room. The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus
