Yes; isn't that romantic?' ¡¡¡¡`No, it's horrid.' ¡¡¡¡`Don't you like it?' ¡¡¡¡`Of course I don't. It's ridiculous; it won't be allowed. My patience! what would Meg say?' ¡¡¡¡`You are not to tell anyone; mind that.' ¡¡¡¡`I didn't promise.' ¡¡¡¡`That was understood, and I trusted you.' ¡¡¡¡`Well, I won't for the present, anyway; but I'm disgusted, and wish you hadn't told me.' ¡¡¡¡`I thought you'd be pleased.' ¡¡¡¡`At the idea of anybody coming to take Meg away? No, thank you.' ¡¡¡¡`You'll feel better about it when somebody comes to take you away.' ¡¡¡¡`I'd like to see anyone try it,' cried Jo, fiercely. ¡¡¡¡`So

should I!' and Laurie chuckled at the idea. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡`I don't think secrets agree with me; I feel rumpled up in my mind since you told me that,' said Jo, rather ungratefully. ¡¡¡¡`Race down this hill with me, and you'll be all right,' suggested Laurie. ¡¡¡¡No one was in sight; the smooth road sloped invitingly before her; and finding the temptation irresistible, Jo darted away, soon leaving hat and comb behind her, and scattering hairpins as she ran. Laurie reached the goal first, and was quite satisfied with the success of his treatment; for his Atalanta came panting up, with flying hair, bright eyes, ruddy cheeks, and no signs of dissatisfaction in her face.

Craddock was silent for a moment or two. He reread the letter carefully before handing it back.
"What did you do on receipt of this letter, Miss Crackenthorpe?"
"My brother-in-law, Bryan Eastley, happened to be staying with me at the time and I talked to him about it. Then I rang up my brother Harold in London and consulted him about it. Harold was rather sceptical about the whole thing and advised extreme caution. We must, he said, go carefully into this woman's credentials."
Emma paused and then went on

"That, of course, was only common sense and I quite agreed. But if this girl - woman – was really the Martine about whom Edmund had written to me, I felt that we must make her welcome. I wrote to the address she gave in her letter inviting her to come down to Rutherford Hall and meet us. A few days later I received a telegram from London: Very sorry forced to return to France unexpectedly. Martine."
"All this took place - when?"
Emma frowned.
"It was shortly before Christmas. I know, because I wanted to suggest her spending Christmas with us - but my father would not hear it - so I suggested she should come down the week-end after Christmas while the family would still be there. I think the wire saying she was returning to France came actually a few days before Christmas."

"You-"Words failed him.His face was livid. His fists clenched menacingly. Two detectives from Scotland Yard emerged from the next room. One of themwas Crome. He advanced and uttered his time-honoured formula:"I warn you thatanything you say may be used as evidence." "He has said quite enough,"said Poirot, and he added to Clarke:"You are very full of an insular superiority, but for myself I consider your crime not an English crime at all-not above-board-not sporting-" ------------------ from: http://christie.soim.net TYPE: Zhaoby

I am sorry to relate that as the door closed behind Franklin Clarke Ilaughed hysterically. Poirot looked at me in mild surprise. "It's because you told him his crime was not sporting,"I gasped. "It was quite true.It was abominable-not so much the murder of hisbrother-but the cruelty that condemned an unfortunate man to a livingdeath. To catch a fox and put him in a box and never let him go!That is notle sport!" Megan Barnard gave a deep sigh. "I can't believe it-I can't.Is it true?" "Yes,mademoiselle. The nightmare is over." She looked at him and her colour deepened.

There was silence for a minute or two,the Fraser said: "The police? Are they doing anything?" "They're upstairs now.Looking through Betty's things,I suppose." "They've no idea who-?They don't know-?" He stopped. He had all a sensitive, shy person's dislike of putting violent factsinto words. Poirot moved forward a little and asked a question. He spoke in a businesslike,matter-of-fact voice as though what he askedwas an unimportant detail. "Did Miss Barnard tell you where she was going last night?" Fraser replied to the question. He seemed to be speaking machanically: "She told me she was going with a girl friend to St Leonards."

"Did you believe her?" "I-"Suddenly the automaton came to life. "What the devil do you mean?" His face then, menacing, convulsed by sudden passion, made me understandthat a girl might well be afraid of rousing his anger. Poirot said crisply: "Betty Barnard was killed by a homicidal murderer.Only by speaking theexact truth can you help us to get on his track." His glance for a minute turned to Megan. "That's right,Don,"she said."It isn't a time for considering one's ownfeelings or anyone else's.Yor've got to come clean." Donald Fraser looked suspiciously at Poirot.

"I think you are a very bad man," said Dorothy.
"Oh, no, my dear; I'm really a very good man, but I'm a very bad Wizard, I must admit."
"Can't you give me brains?" asked the Scarecrow.
"You don't need them. You are learning something every day. A baby has brains, but it doesn't know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get."
Mary Cassatt painting
That may all be true," said the Scarecrow, "but I shall be very unhappy unless you give me brains."
The false Wizard looked at him carefully.
"Well," he said with a sigh, "I'm not much of a magician, as I said; but if you will come to me tomorrow morning, I will stuff your head with brains. I cannot tell you how to use them, however; you must find that out for yourself."
"Oh, thank you -- thank you!" cried the Scarecrow. "I'll find a way to use them, never fear!"

"On a midnight, in December-in a ruined church, your majesty."
Tom shuddered again. "Who was there present?"
"Only these two, your grace-and that other."
"Have these confessed?"
"Nay, not so, sire-they do deny it."
"Then, prithee, how was it known?"
Mary Cassatt painting
"Certain witnesses did see them wending thither, good your majesty; this bred the suspicion, and dire effects have since confirmed and justified it. In particular, it is in evidence that through the wicked power so obtained, they did invoke and bring about a storm that wasted all the region round about. Above forty witnesses have proved the storm; and sooth one might have had a thousand, for all had reason to remember it, sith all had suffered by it."

Then he asked Tom a question in Latin, and Tom answered him lamely in the same tongue. The King was delighted, and showed it. The lords and doctors manifested their gratification also.
The king said:
"'Twas not according to his schooling and ability, but sheweth that his mind is but diseased, not stricken fatally. How say you, sir?"
The physician addressed bowed low, and replied:

It jumpeth with mine own conviction, sire, that thou hast divined aright."
The king looked pleased with this encouragement, coming as it did from so excellent authority, and continued with good heart:
"Now mark ye all: we will try him further."
He put a question to Tom in French. Tom stood silent a moment, embarrassed by having so many eyes centered upon him, then said diffidently

Now he was almost touching Daisy, and he smiled involuntarily as she turned her gay, pretty little face the better to hear what he was saying.
"Yes, Mr. Chandler?" she said interrogatively.
"Well, d'you remember that fellow what killed an old gentleman in a railway carriage? He took refuge with someone - a woman his mother had known, and she kept him hidden for quite a long time. But at last she gave him up, and she got a big reward, too!"
Mary Cassatt painting
I don't think I'd like to give anybody up for a reward," said Bunting, in his slow, dogmatic way.
"Oh, yes, you would, Mr. Bunting," said Chandler confidently. "You'd only be doing what it's the plain duty of everyone - everyone, that is, who's a good citizen. And you'd be getting something for doing it, which is more than most people gets as does their duty."

Now to-day - this day of which the happenings were to linger in Mrs. Bunting's mind so very long, and to remain so very vivid, it had been arranged that Mr. Sleuth was to have some fish for his lunch, while what he left was to be "done up" to serve for his simple supper.
Mary Cassatt painting
Knowing that Bunting would be out for at least an hour, for he was a gregarious soul, and liked to have a gossip in the shops he frequented, Mrs. Bunting rose and dressed in a leisurely manner; then she went and "did" her front sitting-room.
She felt languid and dull, as one is apt to feel after a broken night, and it was a comfort to her to know that Mr. Sleuth was not likely to ring before twelve.

"Something very valuable," replied the young reporter.
At that moment we heard a cry from the laboratory. We rushed in and found Monsieur Stangerson, his eyes haggard, his limbs trembling, pointing to a sort of bookcase which he had opened, and which, we saw

was empty. At the same instant he sank into the large armchair that was placed before the desk and groaned, the tears rolling down his cheeks, "I have been robbed again! For God's sake, do not say a word of this to my daughter. She would be more pained than I am." He heaved a deep sigh and added, in a tone I shall never forget: "After all, what does it matter, - so long as she lives!"

As soon as they reached the shore, Pinocchio was the first to jump to the ground to help his old father. Then he turned to the fish and said to him:
"Dear friend, you have saved my father, and I have not enough words with which to thank you! Allow me to embrace you as a sign of my eternal gratitude."
Mary Cassatt painting
The Tunny stuck his nose out of the water and Pinocchio knelt on the sand and kissed him most affectionately on his cheek. At this warm greeting, the poor Tunny, who was not used to such tenderness, wept like a child. He felt so embarrassed and ashamed that he turned quickly, plunged into the sea, and disappeared.
In the meantime day had dawned.

It passes all imagination! - Nobody under the bed, nobody behind the furniture! - All that we discovered were traces, blood-stained marks of a man's large hand on the walls and on the door; a big handkerchief red with blood, without any initials, an old cap, and many fresh footmarks of a man on the floor, - footmarks of a man with large feet whose boot-soles had left a sort of sooty

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting
