'Then I should love Mrs. Reed, which I cannot do; I should bless
her son John, which is impossible.'
In her turn, Helen Burns asked me to explain, and I proceeded
forthwith to pour out, in my own way, the tale of my sufferings and
resentments. Bitter and truculent when excited, I spoke as I felt,
without reserve or softening.

Helen heard me patiently to the end: I expected she would then make
a remark, but she said nothing.
'Well,' I asked impatiently, 'is not Mrs. Reed a hard-hearted,
bad woman?'
'She has been unkind to you, no doubt; because you see, she
dislikes your cast of character, as Miss Scatcherd does mine; but

Inspector Craddock nodded. Emma went on.
"Imagine my surprise to receive a letter just about a month ago, signed Martine Crackenthorpe."
"You have it?"
Emma took it from her bag and handed it to him. Craddock read it with interest. It was written in a slanting French hand – an educated hand.

Dear Mademoiselle,
Edward Hopper Painting
I hope it will not be a shock to you to get this letter. I do not even know if your brother Edmund told you that we were married. He said he was going to do so. He was killed only a few days after our marriage and at the same time the Germans occupied our village. After the war ended, I decided that I would not write to you or approach you, though Edmund had told me to do so. But by then I had made a new life for myself, and it was not necessary. But now things have changed. For my son's sake I write this letter. He's your brother's son, you see, and I - I can no longer give him the advantages he ought t have. I am coming to England early next week. Will you let me know if I can come and see you? My address for letter is 126 Elvers Crescent, N.10. I hope again this will not be the great shock to you.
I remain with assurance of my excellent sentiments.

You were identified at Bexhill the other day by Milly Higley and a girlfrom the Scarlet Runner Roadhouse, where you took Betty Barnard to dine onthe fatal evening. And finally-most damning of all-you overlook a mostelementary precaution. You left a fingerprint on Cust's typewriter-thetypewriter that,if you are innocent, you could never have handled." Clarke sat quite still for a miture, then he said: "Rouge,impair,manque!-you win,M.Poirot! But it was worth trying!" With an incredibly rapid motion he whipped out a small automatic fromhis pocket and held it to his head. I gave a cry and involuntarily flinched as I waited for the report. But no report came-the hammer clicked harmlessly.
Edward Hopper Painting
Clarke stared at it in astonishment and uttered an oath. "No,Mr Clarke,"said Poirot."You may have noticed I had a newmanservant today-a friend of mine-an expert sneak thief. He removed yourpistol from your pocket, unloaded it,and returned it,all without you beingaware of the fact." "You unutterable little jackanapes of a foreigner!"cried Clarke, purplewith rage. "YEs,yes, that is how you feel. No,Mr Clarke,no easy death for you. You told Mr Cust that you had had near escapes from drowning. You knowwhat that means-that you were born for another fate."

I felt sorry at once for the young man.His white haggard face andbewildered eyes showed how great a shock he had had. He was a well-made,fine-looking,but with a pleasant, freckled face, high cheek-bones and flaming red hair. "What's this,Megan?"he said."Why is here? For God's sake, tell me-I'veonly just heard-Betty......" His voice trailed away. Poirot pushed forward a chair and he sank down on it. My friend them extracted a small flask from his pocket, poured some ofits contents into a convenient cup which was hanging on the dresser and said: "Drink some of this,Mr Fraser. It will do you good."
Edward Hopper Painting
The young man obeyed. The brandy brought a little colour back into hisface. He sat up straighter and turned once more to the girl. His manner wasquite quiet and self-controlled. "It's ture,I suppose?"he said. "Betty is-dead-killed?" "It's true,Don/"He said as though mechanically: "Have you just come down from London?" "Yes.Dad phoned me." "By the 9.30,I suppose?"said Donald Fraser. His mind, shrinking from reality, ran for safety along these unimportantdetails. "Yes."

One of my greatest fears was the Witches, for while I had no magical powers at all I soon found out that the Witches were really able to do wonderful things. There were four of them in this country, and they ruled the people who live in the North and South and East and West. Fortunately, the Witches of the North and South were good, and I knew they would do me no harm; but the Witches of the East and West were terribly wicked, and had they not thought I was more powerful than they themselves
Edward Hopper Painting
they would surely have destroyed me. As it was, I lived in deadly fear of them for many years; so you can imagine how pleased I was when I heard your house had fallen on the Wicked Witch of the East. When you came to me, I was willing to promise anything if you would only do away with the other Witch; but, now that you have melted her, I am ashamed to say that I cannot keep my promises."

"What is it that these have done?" he inquired of the sheriff.
"Please your majesty, a black crime is charged upon them, and clearly proven; wherefore the judges have decreed, according to the law, that they be hanged. They sold themselves to the devil-such is their crime."
Edward Hopper Painting
Tom shuddered. He had been taught to abhor people who did this wicked thing. Still, he was not going to deny himself the pleasure of feeding his curiosity, for all that; so he asked:
"Where was this done?-and when?"

I have no knowledge of this tongue, so please your majesty."
The king fell back upon his couch. The attendants flew to his assistance; but he put them aside, and said:
"Trouble me not-it is nothing but a scurvy faintness. Raise me! there, "tis sufficient. Come hither, child; there, rest thy poor troubled head upon thy father's heart, and be at peace. Thou"lt soon be well; "tis but a passing fantasy. Fear thou not; thou"lt soon be well." Then he turned toward the company; his gentle manner changed, and baleful lightnings began to play from his eyes. He said

"List ye all! This my son is mad; but it is not permanent. Overstudy hath done this, and somewhat too much of confinement. Away with his books and teachers! see ye to it. Pleasure him with sports, beguile him in wholesome ways, so that his health come again." He raised himself higher still and went on with energy. "He is mad; but he is my son, and England's heir; and, mad or sane, still shall he reign! And hear ye further, and proclaim it; whoso speaketh of this his distemper worketh against the peace and order of these realms, and shall to the gallowsEdward Hopper Painting

"I've always declared the fellow had all his senses about him," observed Bunting confidently.
Daisy went on, quite satisfied:
" - however nomad he may be in his habit; must have some habitat where his ways are known to at least one person. Now the person who knows the terrible secret is evidently withholding information in expectation of a reward, or maybe because, being an accessory after the fact
Edward Hopper Painting
he or she is now afraid of the consequences. My suggestion, Sir, is that the Home Secretary promise a free pardon. The more so that only thus can this miscreant be brought to justice. Unless he was caught red-handed in the act, it will be exceedingly difficult to trace the crime committed to any individual, for English law looks very askance at circumstantial evidence."
"There's something worth listening to in that letter," said Joe, leaning forward.

Then, and not till then, she slept again. But in the morning she felt very tired, so tired indeed, that she had been very glad when Bunting good-naturedly suggested that he should go out and do their little bit of marketing.
The worthy couple had very soon discovered that in the matter of catering it was not altogether an easy matter to satisfy Mr. Sleuth

and that though he always tried to appear pleased. This perfect lodger had one serious fault from the point of view of those who keep lodgings. Strange to say, he was a vegetarian. He would not eat meat in any form. He sometimes, however, condescended to a chicken, and when he did so condescend he generously intimated that Mr. and Mrs. Bunting were welcome to a share in it.

"Yes, yes, - we know all about that," said Monsieur de Marquet.
"The robber had another motive for returning to hide under the bed," continued the astonishing boy-journalist. "You might think that he was trying to hide himself quickly on seeing, through the vestibule window, Monsieur and Mademoiselle Stangerson about to enter the pavilion.
Edward Hopper Painting
It would have been much easier for him to have climbed up to the attic and hidden there, waiting for an opportunity to get away, if his purpose had been only flight. - No! No! - he had to be in The Yellow Room."
Here the Chief intervened.
"That's not at all bad, young man. I compliment you. If we do not know yet how the murderer succeeded in getting away, we can at any rate see how he came in and committed the robbery. But what did he steal?"

Exactly. And you?"
"I am the Tunny, your companion in the Shark's stomach."
"And how did you escape?"
"I imitated your example. You are the one who showed me the way and after you went, I followed."
"Tunny, you arrived at the right moment! I implore you, for the love you bear your children, the little Tunnies, to help us, or we are lost!"
Edward Hopper Painting
With great pleasure indeed. Hang onto my tail, both of you, and let me lead you. In a twinkling you will be safe on land."
Geppetto and Pinocchio, as you can easily imagine, did not refuse the invitation; indeed, instead of hanging onto the tail, they thought it better to climb on the Tunny's back.
"Are we too heavy?" asked Pinocchio.
"Heavy? Not in the least. You are as light as sea-shells," answered the Tunny, who was as large as a two-year-old horse.

'I must also tell you, monsieur, that The Yellow Room is a very small room. Mademoiselle had furnished it with a fairly large iron bedstead, a small table, a night-commode; a dressing-table, and two chairs. By the light of the big lamp we saw all at a glance. Mademoiselle, in her night-dress, was lying on the floor in the midst of the greatest disorder.
Edward Hopper Painting
Tables and chairs had been overthrown, showing that there had been a violent struggle. Mademoiselle had certainly been dragged from her bed. She was covered with blood and had terrible marks of finger-nails on her throat, - the flesh of her neck having been almost torn by the nails. From a wound on the right temple a stream of blood had run down and made a little pool on the floor. When Monsieur Stangerson saw his

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper painting
